A troubled build up to the game with the news that Nathan Mellows had been advised to stop playing due to his knee problems and that he risked long term damage if he continued. It’s a real shame after the good start he’s made to the season but hopefully we’ll all see him round the clubhouse over the course of the season. Things then became worse when I got a message from Paul Forbes saying he’d broken his jaw and would be out until Christmas.
We still turned up at Old Parks confident we could get a result. This confidence was knocked slightly when we had a no show and a player turning late meant we kicked off with 10. We went defensive with a 4-4-1 leaving Dodi to put in a shift up top by himself. Things became even worse when after 5 minutes Chris did his ankle but he soldiered on for the full 90 minutes anyway and still played really well.
The containing job worked for a while but then a long ball from a free kick was missed by all bar Josh who headed it off the line but unfortunately it dropped straight to an Old Parks player who smashed it home. We responded well with Dodi spinning his marker and putting in a dangerous cross which was just missed by Phil and Scott. We kept working hard and were well in the game so much so that half of them didn’t realise we were down to 10 men until Robin turned up and started to get ready.
As soon as Robin came on we started making more chances, getting into the channels and putting the ball in the box quicker than in previous weeks. Old Parks were a good side and we more than matched them. Rae, Korek and Williams battled well in the middle and Scott and Robin worked hard on the wings with support from Liam and Josh. Dodi continued to battle up top and with the extra man on he now had more support. As well as being a good side they were also a bit niggly so we had several chances from free kicks. Phil’s delivery was very good and a couple of dodgy defensive headers almost gave us an equaliser.
In the second half we kept working well and made more chances from the wings, Scott had a couple of good efforts and Korek had a decent effort too but we lacked that killer instinct in front of goal. Old Parks who played good football for spells were becoming increasingly limited to long balls to their quick winger. Josh handled him very well and if he ever did get past, Joe and Chris cut out any balls that were put in to the box. We created our best chance of the game when the ball fell to Rae about 35 yards out and he hit a crisp half volley which just whistled past the post, everyone agreed it was incredibly close and definitely the right choice to hit it even though there may have been people in good positions in the box.
We kept plugging away but couldn’t quite break Old Parks down and the game finished 1 – 0. The ref and Old Parks both said we deserved a draw which mirrors last week too. However, playing nice football and deserving to get something from games is good it’s not as good as getting points from games. We all know we have the quality to win these games despite the players we are now missing and I have no doubt we will show this in the upcoming cup games and when we get back to the league.
