Scorers: Daio, Johnson, Spencer(2), Arowosafe, Charles
This week saw the back pitch sprinkled with a bit of AFA Cup magic dust as we took on Old Owens 4s. After a fairly good start to the season we were looking forward to testing ourselves against a higher league opposition but as it turned out this was probably one of the easiest games we will have this year.
We defended the lower end of the ground first half and after a couple of half chances for either side we took the lead about 20 mins in when Daio won the ball about 20 yards out and after a couple of touches curled a lovely ball into the top corner from the edge of the box to register his first AP goal. Our second came from a corner that was flicked on at the near post and left the unmarked Johnson to shin it over the line from a couple of yards out. We got a further two before half time from Arowosafe who followed in on a cross from Benson and Spencer who was first to a rebound and calmly took it round the keeper. The half ended with Fox hitting the post with an overhead toe poke which then cruelly bounced off the line and out.
Second half was mostly one way traffic with Owens resorting to defending deep and AP creating a multitude of chances. We got our fifth goal via Charles who used a neat bit of skill to get past his marker before floating a great shot in from the right that left the Owens keeper stranded. Owens only chance of note came with about 20 to go with a shot from distance that Cook did well to get down to save. Benson, who had been causing trouble down the right all afternoon, went extremely close after a mazy dribble, beating 3 players – a goal would have been well deserved – before putting his shot narrowly wide. Spencer got his second and our sixth after a looping cross into the back post was headed down by Arowosafe for Tom to turn home.
A very “professional” performance and also our first clean sheet of the season. The game was played in a good spirit and credit goes to Old Owens who kept on going to the end.
