Scorers: Forbes(2), Dodimead
A strange game for us to be involved in this week and not just because our unbeaten record finally came to an end.
We were up against a strong norsemen side who were very happy to leave themselves open at the back while throwo men forward. This was in contrast to most our tougher games last season where there were very few chances but we’d tuck one or two away and grind out wins when needed.
We went 1 up through a lovely move when Rich picked out Billy on the edge of the box who was aware of Paul at the back and slide a ball through to him and he calmly finished in to the far corner past the keeper. They cheated their way to an equaliser when their best player was running through on goal, Rae slide to block the shot that never came as he took an extra (and heavy) touch with the ball now seemingly going out for a goal kick he threw himself to the ground despite Rae never getting within a yard of him. The ref, who was at least 40 yards away, gave a penalty despite Rae’s protests and obvious disbelief.
We then went back in front with our own penalty, when their defender ducked to head the ball away he missed it but it came off his arm to stop it going straight to Matt. Our penalty specialist stepped up to smash it home to make it 2 in 2 games.
They then took control with us never getting to grips with their formation and the number of runners from midfield. There were chances at both ends but they got two goals before half time, one from a corner and the other from a ball we never managed to clear that was turned in at close range.
We spoke at half time about what needed to be done to get control of the game but it never really happened. They increased their lead further and we went more attacking to try and fight fire with fire. Forbes got his second to put is back in with a shout of getting something out of the game when he finished from an improbable angle. We then conceded another within a minute or two and three game was as good as over. We continued to attack, leaving ourselves open at the back and they hit us on the break again to round off a day that showed that there will be tough games this year.
After the comfortable win in the first game this has shown that we will need to be at our best every week if we are going to challenge near the top of this league.
A huge thing will be how we react as a team to the new challenge. As long as we keep the same spirit from last year I have no doubt we can do well in this league.
Let’s show this in what is a massive game next week. Not only is it against the 4s but with us winning one and losing one it could have a big impact on setting the tone of our season.
