Scorers: N.Jones, Arowosafe
A very frustrating afternoon for the 4s as we headed to Potters Bar to take on Old Owens 5s. We had the honour of playing on Owens main pitch which must have made some of their squad feel right at home and which we will be able to dream about when we are away at Firms Farm in December.
For the first half hour we played Owens off the park creating at least 10 clear cut chances which would have finished the game as a contest. As it was we got 2, the first an almost apologetic volley from Nye Jones from a Caudrot cross following a great passing move across the park and the second from Arowosafe after another great passing move that saw him put through one on one with the keeper. At 2-0 we switched off slightly and lost our shape which allowed Owens back into the game and they got their first just before halftime when a corner was volleyed in.
The second half was much tighter as we struggled to get our passing rhythm going again with Owens sitting deep and looking to hit us on the break. The equaliser came after we failed to clear a cross from the right which was then cut back to an on rushing midfielder who left Emmott with no chance. 2-2 and we started to come out of our slumber with both teams creating some good chances. With about 20 to go a 50/50 challenge just inside our box saw the referee award Owens a penalty…not the first unusual decision…which was converted to give Owens a 3-2 lead. There was still plenty for us to get something out of the game. We created two great chances with Arowosafe and Caudrot and had a couple of our own penalty appeals turned down but we just couldn’t find a way through a packed Owens defence.
While there were rightful some moans after the game about the penalty decision with the amount of chances we missed in the first half we really should have put the game to bed in the first half. Despite the negative result their are lots of positives to take from the game: the football we played in the first half was outstanding with the whole team contributing; we created a huge number of chances that on another day would have seen us comfortable winners and we also showed some great spirit to not let our heads drop and keep pushing for an equaliser until the final whistle.
