So here is a belated match report for our vital win against a rough Old Stationers team which has lined us up with a huge game vs EBOGs 5s on saturday. When we first arrived, the game felt like a potential banana skin for our title aspirations as some of us had been partying with boy band Blue and others making a drunken flight from Dublin in the early hours of Saturday morning!
Thankfully this wasn’t the case as the 5s yet again showed their physical strength in grinding out a result and staying mentally strong against a team who were out to get us from the off! We were unusually slow out of the blocks for this game as we gave OS a lot of time on the ball and let them run at us a little too often. Having said that OS didn’t really threaten Sievewrights goal too much in the first half.
We had most of our luck down the wings with Forbes direct approach causing trouble on the right. Jack Morris also showed excellent footwork on a number of occasions to get himself into shooting positions but unfortunately, just lacking the finish. For this match a big mention has to go to Matt Dodimead for his performance. A player who has been unusually short on goals this season has put in hard working performance after performance and has been an integral part to the 5s success both on and off the pitch. Against OS he scored two lovely finishes and looked like a striker full of confidence. He was very close to a hat trick where his superb volley was equally superbly saved by their keeper!
The second half got very scrappy and it looked more and more like OS were up for a fight instead of a footy game and it turned into that as I received a punch to the back of my head off the ball…unfortunately the ref didn’t see the incident and no further action was taken. I’m a strong believer of letting the football do the talking instead of reacting and thats exactly what we did!
1-0 up in the second half and for the first time in the match we found ourselves caught short at the back… three OS players were unmarked at the back post with only substitute Josh hyde spotting the danger…and thankfully for us he made a match winning headed clearance which ended up starting a counter attack which we went onto score with Dodimead showing true striker prowess to finish and put us 2-0 up instead of drawing 1-1.
Every single player played out of their skin in this battle of a match…and furthermore everyone stuck to the AP way and didn’t get involved with any of the scrappy shenanigans.
And now we look forward to our huge game vs EBOGS and with a victory… I may even start whispering the C, P and I word…but lets not get carried away now!!
