A very disappointing result meant our promotion challenge is as good as over. The manner of the performance was also frustrating. In the first half we were poor, giving Norsemen too much space to dictate the game and a clumsy challenge in the box from Jamie led to a penalty and a 1-0 deficit. Despite being second best for most of the half we could have been level at half time, with a bizarre moment when Banny hassled their defence into a mistake, knocked it over the keeper and as everyone was celebrating he headed wide.
Still second half we had the hill with us and looked much the stronger side. We went level when Robin skinned the left back and crossed into the danger zone, the ball evaded everyone and looped into the net. From there we continued to dominate and Banny put us in front, beating the defender and tucking it into the bottom left, 2-1. We were on top and looked like we were cruising to victory but we were caught on the counter, didn’t get close enough to our men and their striker smacked it past Conner in goal, catching everyone by surprise. Still we looked like the better side and I was confident we would get more chances. Again it was Banny that came to the rescue with a goal out of the top draw.
On the edge of the box he turned shot and curled it into the top right. A great way to grab the lead. Unfortunately for us we dropped our concentration and again let Norsemen back into the game with 15 to go. We failed to defend the long corner and watched as they headed it back in the box and finished from close range. The goal was like a hammer blow to our confidence and with 5 to go a communication breakdown led to James heading it past his own keeper, allowing their striker to tap in from 2 yards. Shambles.
In the final 5 we never really looked like recovering the situation, we knew only a win would do and heads dropped. Too many mistakes and a lack of sharpness allowed the game to slip away from us. I was also not pleased to see us arguing amongst ourselves. We are a team, we win together and lose together, we need to fight for each other not against each other. If we do that the opposition has already won. We have 4 games left and nothing really to lose, so let’s go out there enjoy it and come back stronger.
Three contenders for man of the match this week, Danny H had a solid debut showing some good touches and Robin had a great game, getting what he deserved with a goal. However despite the fact it should have been a hat trick Banny gets it with his two goals
