Alexandra Park 5s 2 – Old Parkonians 6s 0

SAL Minor Div 2 North | February 21, 2015

Scorers: Bowhill, Forbes

Shock horror a 5s game that survived the weather and went ahead at a slightly boggy Preston Manor! This week we probably had our strongest 14 man squad available and it showed in a brilliant performance against a very decent Old Parks team who ran us close just before Christmas when we beat them 1-0.

This week started cagey and a lot of play down the right hand side with neither teams making much headway! There must have been around 50 throw ins on the right hand side in the first 30 minutes… James Rae was getting a little peeved for having to constantly collecting the ball!

Old Parks pressed but with no real shots to test Sievewright apart from a looping shot which Andy showed incredible flexibility to claw away! As the half went on AP started to get a foot in the game and should have been ahead. Some great balls were coming in from Forbes and Morris but unfortunately just being missed out on being put away. Rich Bowhill had our first big chance running onto a spilled ball from the keeper but ended up putting it wide! We’ll blame the pitch for that one…but no need to worry as Bowhill stepped up again and ended up driving in a crisp daisy cutter/ mud splattered 12 yard finish past their keeper! 1-0 to AP!

Now we can’t moan about the ref too much but he made some awful decisions including when Paddy Knight ran through on goal and got brought down by a terrible challenge from behind from their last man! All Knight could do was laugh at the lack of a even a free-kick! We could have gone 2-0 up before the break as a delicious ball was whipped into the back post but unfortunately Wilson and Morris got in each others way and the chance went begging!

H-T 1-0 to AP

The second half was a bit of a scrap as Old Parks pushed at us but just like the rest of the season our ability to defend as a team shone out! Dodimead sprinting after every ball like a mad man and closing down their defence…he even managed to scare off their right back!

Watson in midfield constantly stopped their midfield from running through! The defence was solid as ever…Robinson putting in another solid performance and special mention to Murphy who came on for the injured Doyle…he hasn’t played for over two months and was a rock at left back. Fortucci was class this week too when he took over from Watson, showing composure and drive in midfield.

Paul Forbes had a stand out game and mid way through the second half was unlucky to finish off a nice passing move and ended up hitting the side netting! However 10 mins to the end Forbes got his reward from endless running and terrorising their defence with a lovely one on one finish! The points were ours!

Six games left now and although everyone may be getting a little excited as EBOG 5s slipped up again with a draw…we want to win these six games and concede as little as possible! MOM: Everyone in the team could have been mom but Paul Forbes gets the nod for an impressive debut for the 5s.
