Scorers: Doyle, Robertson
Spirits were high after last week’s good win and the social that followed. The pre-match build up was focussed on piecing together the previous weekend and the tales of those who lasted the distance. Maybe due to this or just because it has become customary for us to, we started second best.
Southgate had a few decent players and looked long to their big man up and tried to get him to hold it up for their couple of quick and skilful runners from midfield. The game was open and the pace quick but while our crosses were over hit or through balls missed placed they were getting the ball down on the edge of the box and looking dangerous but we were remaining solid at the back with Rae putting in a good sliding tackle when their winger had got away.
We did fashion one good chance where after a good cross from Dodi, Tom just put it over, but their not very mobile but very effective sweeper keeper was dealing well with most of our through balls. An inspired change from Al saw Liam come on on the left wing and almost immediately score. The play was slowed down for once and played back to John who played a good ball down the line to Paddy. He then held it up and slipped in a pass for the underlapping Liam to cut inside and smashed a shot past the keeper.
We built on this and looked after the ball better, maintaining possession rather than rushing the ball forward. This, in my opinion, is where we are at our best and we should do this more consistently. We have a good squad who are all comfortable on the ball, so should trust in each other more and use the easy option.
As always Tom, Duane and Chris were combative in midfield whilst also providing the creativity to build attacks while Bowhill was doing well in his new right wing role getting forward well and putting some dangerous balls in the box but with no one on getting on the end.
As we started the second Joe and Al had adapted well at the back to deal with their long balls effectively so the oppo’s threat diminished. We also got a crucial second goal thanks to a lovely through ball from Duane for Billy to run on to and neatly slot (or punt depending on who you speak to) past the keeper. After this Southgate started throwing more men forward but as it has been all season we dealt with whatever they through forward and Andy was dealing dominantly with any crosses or shots they managed to get off.
Oli came on and worked hard up and down the right wing almost catching their keeper out with a brilliant effort as he was again off his line but he managed to pull off a good save. We picked up a few knocks towards the end and had to reshuffle the defence but still stayed strong and restricted them to a few long efforts with Andy pulling off a great save at the death, resulting in another clean sheet jug. Another solid, hardworking team performance getting a win against a decent opposition.
