Alexandra Park 8s 6 – Old Lyonians 5s 1

Minor Division 5 North | November 23, 2013

Goals: Jenkins (3), Kendal (2), Wilson

After travelling to our “home” game in Wembley, which was the most challenging part of the afternoon with the rugby on and the Piccadilly line down, the AP 8’s were looking to get revenge on an Old Lyonians team that were lucky to beat us the first time around.

The match started positively for AP, with us applying early pressure, and their keeper looking dodgey from the start (it latter transpired he was a right back). Before too long a ball rolled through to their keeper, and for reasons best known to himself, rather than picking it up he smashed it, and after a few ricochets (one involving Reece I think) the ball fell to Adam who calmly placed it in the net past the now out of position keeper.

Not easily satisfied, it was not long before AP started applying pressure again. With some silky lead up play, Adam found himself on the edge of the box with the ball at his feet completely unmarked. He calmly slotted it away for 2-0. The first half wasn’t without its scares, with Old Lyionians hitting the post on one occasion, but other than that they did not really bother our defence. Then tragedy struck! A horror tackle on Liam put him out of the game, but hopefully he will be back next week. Matt came on to replace Liam, and within a couple of minutes had won a blatant penalty. Adam stepped up and put it away for his first half hat trick. Not wanting to be left too far behind in the race for the golden boot, Reece controlled a beautiful knock on from Adam, beat his man and scored to make it 4 – 0. Overall a productive first half.

A few changes happened at half time and AP again started well. Before too long we had scored again, either a great knock down by Adam and put away well by Matt, or a great ball through to Reece who then beat a man and the keeper. Whichever one of these was not the fifth goal, became the sixth. Either way we were 6-0 up and looking for our first clean sheet on the season. Unfortunately we then became a little too complacent and allowed Old Lyonians to start having more of the ball.

At one point there was a vital clearance off the line from a corner, but they were getting closer. Close to the end a couple of unlucky ricochets led to their striker being in on goal. Gus brought him down for a penalty, which they scored. So close to that clean sheet! Oh well, 6-1 is a decent result and we left our “home” ground in Wembley happy with the result, until of course we saw the queue at the tube station as the rugby had just finished!

MOM: Some great performances and a hat trick from Adam and two from Reece make the MOM difficult to award this week. However I am going to have to give a joint one to Jamie and Eric. They absolutely bossed the midfield which allowed us to play some great football and make all those chances. Old Lyonians didn’t have a chance!
