We went into Saturday’s game at Old Owens on the back of 3 straight wins and sitting top of the league. This being a complete reversal to the start of last season where the 5s lost their first 3 games and sat bottom!!
Confidence was high before kick off, maybe a little too high as Old Owens started strongly and i’m not being harsh in saying we were played off the park during the first half hour…going 3-0 down!!
The whole team had started slowly but despite a potential drubbing being on the cards, never let their heads drop and started to string some decent play together with Dodimead pulling a goal back just before half time. A goal which surprisingly wasn’t on his left foot and wasn’t a lob!!
A change in formation to a 3-5-2 at half time, bringing on Parsons to try and get a foothold in central midfield, seemed to even up the game in an end to end second half.
An AP free kick on the edge of the box seemed to be the turning point as Ekunno curled smartly into the bottom corner to continue his run of scoring form. At 3-2 the comeback seemed to be on only for some hesitant defending gifting Owens a 4th goal.
The drama didn’t end there though as some swift passing in the AP midfield and a drilled cross from the right was converted by excellent Knight to bring us back to 4-3.
Owens were getting frustrated as their first half dominance was being undone and the late challenges started to fly in, the ref brandishing yellow twice. The hard work eventually paid off though, Dodimead beating the offside trap to slot home the equalizer!!
Into the last 10 minutes, both sides pushed for the winner with goalkeepers and woodwork being tested at both ends. Finally, in the dying seconds Glassar was presented with an open goal only to slice his effort wide with the last kick of the game! Heavy legs beginning to tell after a hard fought game.
Overall a really good fight back from the team when we could have easily crumbled.
M.O.M – Paddy Knight. Who seemed to develop the ability to teleport in the second half as he covered every blade of grass!
