Alexandra Park 7s 3 – Civil Service 7s 1

SAL Intermediate Novets Cup | September 21, 2013

Goals: Smith, Kennedy, Jones

After starting our league campaign with a win the 7’s marched on into the next game with a boost in confidence where we found ourselves up against Civil Service in a cup match. A 45 minute warm up of constantly hoofing the ball at Jamie in goal left us in great shape for the upcoming 90 minutes.

The game begun with both teams putting decent passes together and forming some nice attacks. Luckily for us we were the first out of the sides to take our chance, when the opposition defender and keeper had a moment of confusion which rewarded Smith with an easy goal scoring chance to which he neatly tucked away into the open goal.

As the first half progressed we started to lack possession of the ball, but it proved not to be a problem with everyone putting in good defensive shifts, especially Duane and Dan at the back who were outstanding throughout the game. With around ten minutes to go until half time we thought we had extended our lead when Dan Ware nodded the ball in from a cross, although the ref decided to disallow the goal as I had shouted ‘2-0!’ before the ball had passed the line. Apologies, Dan! The decision left everyone confused but the game went and we saw out the 1-0 lead into half time.

Changes made at half time saw Tommy White replace Jack at centre mid and the introduction of Matt in place of Callum. The early stages of the second half were pretty even with most of the play being in the midfield area. We started to gain more possession as time went on and with that came our second goal of the game. The move involved some nice link-up play between Lewis, Charlie and James Kennedy who managed to produce a thunderbolt of a shot into the top corner of the net, leaving the veteran keeper no chance of hobbling over quick enough to save the shot.

The only way in which Civil Service were managing to cause problems were from corners, where they managed to get a penalty from. God knows what went on but it seemed the ref had spotted something that he deemed worthy of a pen. The opposition player finished well to put them right back into the game. At 2-1 the pressure was right on us not to let our lead slip. From the goal onwards the team showed great composure to keep playing our football.

The 7’s did well to continue to threaten throughout the final minutes whilst defending our lead. Our late pressure paid off when Ditmir delivered a lovely corner which found Charlie, who did superbly to header the ball home. 3-1 and the game was as well as won.

Great performances all round once again, but MOTM has to go to Charlie, who was involved in each of the goals and was a nightmare for the opposition defence. Our recent form has been great, let’s keep this going lads!
