Scorer: Mounir

A scrappy game on Pitch 2 and a draw was a fair result. Both sides had the upper hand kicking downhill but struggled in the opposite direction. It was a proper midfield battle and neither keeper – Scott Kendall and Bryan King – was seriously tested with defences on top.

The 9s were the better side in the first 45 but we couldn’t get the 2 or 3 goal cushion required knowing the 8s would have the advantage of the slope after half-time. We made the breakthrough when Reece’s through ball was poked home by Mounir from 15 yards out. As I suspected we had to work hard to quell the 8s in the second 45 to keep them out, but they created few chances. Finally they equalised when we failed to clear our box and a loose ball was driven home by Junior Galli. Set pieces looked their best bet to get a winner but Emlyn Robbins headed over from a corner while a James Kennedy free kick in the last minute hit our wall.

Overall, a fair but competitive game which ended our run of defeats. There were lots of good performances – Shah, Kashmiri and Hicks, for example – but the 9s MOM was Euan Millard at sweeper.

AP: S. Kendall, Ellacott, Millard, Hicks, Shah, R. Kendall, Mahbubani (c), Coward, Tullett, Hendrichs, Raxworthy. Subs: Bagley, Kashmiri, Stewart, Mounir.
