Old Owens 7s 2 – Alexandra Park 6s 3

League | November 12, 2011

It was a bit of a rollercoaster on Saturday to say the least. The banter in the dressing room and on the pristine pitch before kick off was top class and everybody was in a confident mood. However, ten minutes after kick off we found ourselves down 1-0.Owens were looking more threatening and lively down the right wing and put us under pressure. We conceded a number of corners but managed to keep Owens out. Jack and Declan began to push forward later in the half and Mel and Nathan were beginning to create chances.

At half time, we were 1-0 down and the mood was very subdued. Owens kicked off the second half with confidence and we seemed to stand back and allow them to play. Their second goal, which was a touch lucky, came early into the half again and Owens began to act as if the game was over. The no 24 tried a “keepy uppy” trick near the sideline to showboat to the watching audience, such was the confidence of the team and they certainly tried to wear down the clock any time the ball went out of play.

Their attitude seemed to regenerate the spark that was in our team before kick off, as we began to dominate all over the pitch. The last twenty minutes was full of hard work and the performance of all 14 players was everything that you want on a Saturday afternoon. Every 50/50 tackle was won, the defence controlled every ball and midfield and upfront ensured that nearly every ball was played to feet and the chances started to appear. Ollie and Anthony combined well to set up the opener and Rob’s finish lifted our spirits even more.

We were dominating in the middle and putting their back four under constant pressure and shortly after scored the equaliser. Nathan and Rich put Rob through for his second and the equaliser! Game on, Owens began to panic and desperately hit one long ball after another reminiscent of our display last week! We continued to dominate and Nathan’s hard work all afternoon was rewarded when he scored a well deserved winner minutes from the end. The banter returned as we walked off the pitch with three points in the bag!

Another spirited effort from the entire team to turn the game around. Impossible to pick a man of the match! Well done everybody!

Team: James Goodrum, Chirac Shah, Derek Graham, Mike Myers, Harald Krefting, Declan Dunning (Ollie Edge), Anthony Shaw, Richard Fryer, Jack Dudmish (John Scantlebury), Nathan Mellows, Melvin Loughnane (Robert Blade).
