Alexandra Park 5s 3 – Old Actonians 6s 1

SAL Senior Novets Cup Round 2 | November 12, 2011

Chapter 10

Effective football as the weather turns will win games

After the big cup match of last week people were clambering to be a part of the team so in we welcomed Jamie Roberts, Sam Battams, Josh Hyde and Fraser and also returning unscathed from Colchester were White and Ditmir.

The team lined up with Hyde as makeshift left back, Lewis and Jenkins starting in the middle and, for the first time this year, the same two up top with Dodimead and Firth.

Winning the toss we started off shooting up the hill, talking about trying to get the ball down as much as possible and track the runners as they came down at us. Continuing last week’s form we did this well, pressuring all over the pitch with Lewis and Jenkins in the middle looking particularly imperious.

The first goal was soon to follow, Old Actonians rolling a ball back to their keeper who decided to pick it up. The indirect free kick was taken quickly, whilst Old Actonians argued, with Firth teeing up Dodimead to slot home from a mile offside.

We continued to own the game, the only danger coming from Actonian’s physical right winger. The second was a bit of class from Lewis, waiting to pick an inch perfect pass to Firth who skipped past a player and smashed home. The strikers were having a field day with their slow defensive markers and we would have gone in at half time with a comfortable two goal lead if the skipper hadn’t decided to swing round a simple volley to clear his lines, gifting the centre forward a 1:1 with Jamie.

The second half started in similar fashion. A curling lofted corner from Ditmir bought the third, Dodimead nodding in from 2.3 inches ‘just in case’. Lewis having taken a hefty knock to the ribs rolled off for White, Ditmir for Battams and Hyde for Fraser. Jamie was feeling rather perturbed at not having much to do so decided to play football with his little brother instead whilst the rest of the team pushed for the fourth.

All in all a good win setting the boys up nicely for the return to league action (and a likely quarter final away against HSBC 5s in the cup).

MoM Paul Jenkins, solid all day, battled back to form running the midfield.
