Scorer: Croft (2)
Two strikes from Peter Croft gave the 8s a good start to their new season against a very average Winchmore Hill side. After a 30 minute delay, caused by the home team’s late arrival, the new look 8s squeezed into their tight, itchy, vomit yellow shirts and got their pre season underway.
After an opening 20 minutes of continuously giving the ball away, the 8s decided to pass it to each other and Crofty’s opener, after good work from Jan Lott, seemed to calm the visitors down. Further chances were created with George Waldrum, Dave Potter and Sam Wolfman going close.
Emlyn Robbins replaced Tolcher at Half time with the team keeping their 4-3-3 formation. Jack Parsons bossed the centre of midfield allowing Dave Potter and Jan Lott to push forward and create further chances.
At 1-0 the game wasn’t over and the visitors needed a good save from Jamie, and some commanding defending from debutant Tim Soundy, to keep them in front. Pete Croft smashed in his second from the edge of the area to make it 2-0 and the 8s should really have added to the score line with a succession of good chances. Will Dudmish hit a post and full back Stephen Payne went close after a marauding run forward.
Overall it was a positive start to the season but with plenty of room for improvement.
There were a number of candidates for man of the match – Jack Parsons ( for managing to upset the whole of the home team’s midfield with his tough tackling AND banter), Jan Lott / Sam Wolfman (for completing the full 90 minutes after a skinfull the previous night), and Tim Soundy, for coming straight to the game from Fabric. The award has to go to the match winner, Peter Croft, who did a great job of holding the ball up and scoring two “goal of the season” contenders.
