Alexandra Park 4 – Kew Association 2

AFA Senior Cup | December 15, 2007

Scorer: Kenga(4)

Finally, at the third time of asking this fixture took place and it was worth the wait! We spoke about having more of a togetherness and collective responsibility on the pitch prior to the match, and I can say for 90% of it we did.

I’m sorry this is a bit rushed but time has not been on my side this week so it will be the very-edited version.

We kicked off with Egan back in defence after a 4 or 5 week absence due to injury, Danny O’ starting at right back and new boy Yusuf Cicek starting on the right of midfield, with Paul.M taking his place on the bench like a true team player! We felt this game would be ours and the opening exchanges saw us making great strides down the right with Danny and Yusuf linking well with the front two, Elion and Jay. After 20 mins Yusuf went off sick and Paul.M came on with Danny pushing up to right mid. We scored first through Elion with them equalising soon after. Then not long before half time we took the lead again through Elion to go in 2-1 at half time.

A good team talk emphasised the need to up our game more from the very good level it was at, to finish the oppo off!!

The 2nd half began and we disregarded the team talk, in the mean time a mix up at the back gifted them a 2nd equaliser. Obviously, they felt it was their time, but, I’m glad to say, we responded in exactly the way I wanted by taking the game to them with Janno’s new midfield partner Will I having an all action performance. We took the lead for a 3rd time but this time for keeps, with Els completing his hat-trick after a long run down the right from Jay and lovely cross for Els to do the rest.

A 4th came for Elion with his best of the lot. With the ball at his feet about 20 yards out the defence gave him too much space and he unleashed a shot into the top left hand corner. Game over!!!

So, to have to take the lead three times and keep focused enough to then kill the game off is a massive step in the right direction and the perfect tonic for the bread and butter game coming up this week at home to Old Parks in the league!
