Scorers: Neill, Cadrot, Hancock
2 months ago winning promotion was out of our hands after 3 defeats on the bounce. That by coincidence was when I missed 3 weeks. Now after 4 wins in a row we arrived at Barnes Bridge looking to maintain top spot.
A few changes to the squad brought Jack Mead starting right wing after pre match problems for Jake. In the absence of Phil Evans, Onique held the forward line.
The first chance of the game came to the home side with a well hit volley into the top corner. Fortunately, I was well positioned to move to my right hand and push away for a corner. They had 2 tall centre backs and give us plenty to think about at set plays. The bonus of this was when we cleared our lines we took advantage of the counter attack situation.
We generally had most of the play in the 1st half just faltering at the final pass or not been composed enough to finish the job. Their keeper was only really tested twice with a strong sunshine in his eye sight. I’d say with about 10 left in the half we finally make the break through. A forward run from Richie Hancock and before he collapsed in exhaustion or nose bleed he curled a beautiful lob over the goalkeeper.
In at half time we were in a comfortably position. Thinking if we get the next goal we should be able to hold on with little fuss. Even get a clean sheet that has been few and far between this season. “Big first 5 minutes”.
So we then concede in the first few minutes. A soft free kick awarded, still adjusting to the strong sunshine disarray occurred and no marking affording their centre back to score an unattractive overhead kick from a standing position.
We have let many teams into games hense the lack of cleansheets. We did well to hold on to our heads. We dusted ourselves down and go back to basics. We know we only needed to get hold of the ball and our quality will show.
It took a little longer but that quality did provide the 2nd goal. It hadn’t been Julien’s best game this season but he produced the goods with a superb free kick into the top corner. Not even Courtois would have reached it.
That seemed to have shocked the opponents and a little like last week another quick goal. Richard Neil winning a 50/50 aerial battle with the goalkeeper made it 3-1.
Like recent weeks I have constantly said “it’s a massive game lads”. It’s true but maybe getting a bit repetitive. To win the league we need 4 points in our final 2 games. Maybe less depending on other results. We will aim for 6 as any team should. VAMOS 3s
