Alexandra Park Vets 2 – Persian 0

BSFL Veterans Div 1 | October 16, 2016

Scorer: Jenkins, Day

After picking up our first win the previous week our biggest test so far against the free scoring Persian team.

Persian in their previous 3 matches had scored 27 and conceded a miserly 2 so we knew we would need to be on our game from the start.

Playing on the superb condition Pitch 1 – well done to the AP ground staff – we started well and were harassing the oppo at every opportunity.  The oppo were stunned by our closing down and high tempo and I think they were expecting it to be a walk in the park!

But AP Vets are starting to purr nicely now and we were giving as good as we got.  They had a few shots from outside the area which went wide of the far post.  This gave us the heads up that they don’t score screamers but prefer to score from well-placed shots.

At 0-0 after 20 mins Gerry came round the blind side of the oppo midfielder to head a bouncing ball only to catch the oppo’s high boot flush in the face.  Unfortunately Gerry had to rush off for stitches (8 of them) in his torn lip – being built from girders he’ll be back for more next week.  Adam took Gerry’s place on the pitch and we continued to dominant but needed a goal for out hard work.  The goal came on the half hour when Ross and Adam combined to put Adam in space is shot from the edge of the box should have been saved by their diving keeper but it somehow bounced over his hand.  I can understand why Adam didn’t celebrate the goal – but a goal is a goal!

This knocked the oppo and it got worse for the oppo when their captain who was keeping our defence occupied had to go off with a hamstring pull.

1-0 at half time and a thoroughly deserved lead. As the saying goes the next goal was going to be the all-important one.

We kept focus and continued to hunt for the opening that would give us a 2nd goal as kill the game off.

Chances came and went but their keeper was suddenly having a blinder – Wayne made a storming run down the left wing, cut the ball back, but their keeper made a good save at his near post.

Still playing good football and giving their midfield and front line scraps outside our penalty area we broke down the left, their keeper made yet another good save but the rebound was cut back across the 6 yard box for the on rushing Andy Day to coolly slot into the net.

The oppo knew the game was gone and now reverted to arguing with the ref with their midfielder being booked and then continuing to argue with the ref.  The ref gave him a good 5 warnings but in the end his patience was spent and gave a second yellow.

This forced the oppo to take the game to us and they went 3 up front.  They did hit the bar with a well-placed shot but on the whole we repelled everything they threw at us.

An excellent result and thoroughly deserved.
