Five words sum up the day and game:
So, let’s go through these words
Well it has been a while since I made a trek around to Poly’s ground and I have to admit I haven’t and will continue not to miss the North Circular on a Saturday afternoon. No sooner had we turned onto the A406 from Bounds Green Road and we came to a grinding halt. In 30 minutes we crawled to the exit for Friern Barnet and made our way via Finchley Central to pick the A406 up. At last the traffic moved freely until we hit Brent Cross – then we were at a standstill again. After 2 hours we finally arrived at Poly’s ground where frustration turned to…
10 men!!!! Let me repeat that for everyone reading this report… 10 MEN!!! With a team fighting relegation how does communication break down so much to allow a team to play with 10 men? Answers on a postcard please. With so many A.P. teams in jeopardy of relegation I am full of bewilderment that this can happen to the 3rd team or any other team in the club.
But hey, the biggest insult was to come in the match…
Now this is a rather strong word but you’ll understand the reason why I chose this word.
So with 10 MEN (sorry just got to highlight that again!) and numerous players playing out of position we started in a 4-4-1 formation with a single recognized defender playing in the back four. It was a fairly even opening with the whole team working hard for one another repelling the attacks of the opposition. With a rare excursion into the Poly half we fashioned some room and Ben got a great cross-shot away which nestled in the far corner. From then on it was backs against the wall with their forwards hitting our post twice. But apart from that we held firm. With a minute to half time Kurt lost out in a battle with their forward but got back nicked the ball away him just as the forward was about to shoot – in doing so the forward kicked the back of Kurt’s leg and fell over – Unbelievably the ref gave a penalty! Not one Poly player appealed for the penalty which says it all.
The second 45 was mainly played in our half but some poor (passing/shooting) decisions by the oppo and the tireless work ethic of the team kept Poly’s clear cut chances to a minimum. With 5 minutes to go an attack down our right flank resulted in a cross to their offside forward (3 yards off) headed into the net. Yes, we felt cheated…
We fully deserved at least a point from this game and were gutted to lose a match to two very poor refereeing decisions…apart from that the ref had a decent enough game. There is no doubt in my mind that we would have won the match if we had had 11 men.
It is impossible to name a single person as man-of-the-match as every single player put everything in to getting a positive result. From keeper through to our lone striker everyone should be proud of how they played.
