A win and a clean sheet, who can complain? Well apart from the fact it should have been about 20-0 not me. We tend to make hard work out of easier opposition and play better against the top sides, but to be fair to Crouch End they made us work for it and there was a few tired legs by the end of the game. AP started positively and created lots of chances (chances to smash the ball into the local neighbourhood gardens that is). Our defence looked solid and apart from one good diving save Henry was barely threatened in goal. We got ourselves in dangerous positions, though generally the ref’s definition of dangerous was interpreted as being offside. Our pressure resulted in about 15 corners, but despite some decent balls into the box the first half stats would have showed about 1 shot on target. The strikers’ main complaint was that Vamps keeper looked so crap it was putting them off.
We continued where we left off in the second period, though this time the target was a big hedge. Fortunately 10 mins in Oli M settled some frustration by getting some space and tucking his shot beyond the keeper, putting us 1-0 up. We continued to dominate the ball, but were unable to put the game to bed, Louis hit the bar and found the only shot that did hit the net was ruled out offside. Just when we started to worry Vamps may nick an equaliser Ben popped up to bury a rebound in the back of the net and relieve a few frayed nerves, 2-0. Fortunately this Vamps team looked to have much less bite than some of their other sides and AP cruised to a comfortable win. The fact that we ground out a win when we weren’t at our best is a sign of good teams right? I certainly think we have a good group of players and we will aim to finish the season with a flourish.
MoM goes to Paul T for a solid display in the middle, pulling the strings and showing some quality and composure on the ball.
