The first week of good footballing conditions were matched by a week of a good footballing performance by the 5s to make it 3 wins in the last 4.
We started the game choosing to go up hill, a risky decision as they stayed well last time we played them. It took us a few minutes to get going and our newly put together midfield 3 of Duane, Luke and Felipe to get used to each other and there were a couple of times they got runners through who should have been tracked. Once we did though we began to take control.
We got at their defence with Dodi, Lewis and Josh all causing their full backs difficulties, Lewis putting in a couple of dangerous balls which were either blocked or we couldn’t get on the end of. Dodi then whipped in a beautiful ball bisecting the defence and the keeper but when Lewis arrived at the far post he just steered it wide. Apparently it bobbled.
Old Lyonians did cause us some difficulties but Duane marshalled the midfield excellently and the back 4 stood strong. Joe and Al dealt with their striker and number 10 comfortably with Liam restricting their right wing to virtually nothing.
We took the lead when Lewis cut in from the right beat a couple of men and smashed it in from a tight angle. We could have doubled this when from almost exactly the same position Lewis hit the post with Dodi well placed. We did get the second before half time when Dodi was set free, got in to the box and cut back only to have his legs taken from under him by the chasing defender. He coolly slotted it home and it was 2-0 at half time going up the hill. Pretty much the prefect half.
We started the second half playing calm and relaxed football, passing the ball around nicely and looking confident with McGlogan on to ooze his usual class in the back 4 and Benson on at left wing to cause problems with his trickery. We had chances to add more but the pitch, which had taken a lot of rain recently and was still suffering the effects of this, was boggy around their box so the strikers chose to blame that for their missed chances.
Old Lyon’s did battle to keep going but already 2 down and going up the hill the struggled to create too much and when they did Andy was making alert stops. We kept control of the game in midfield and kept making chances and Dodimead got the second he deserved after the ball was cut in from the right. A shot was blocked and Dodi was quickest to react and poke it home. 3 became 4 when Dodi had another effort saved but Lewis, who was just back on after a break, reacted quickest to slot home.
That was the game over there and for the last 15 min we were secure at the back and good going forward, it finished 4 – 0 and was a really good team performance.
