Arriving at Fir Farm to play our league game it seemed more appropriate that we should be playing WINDMORE rather than WINCHMORE Hill such was the strength of Storm Desmond.
Another week and a mix of faces from the past , the present and the future. Matt Piner who has be off trying to find himself on his round the world tour started at the back while Joe Robinson decided to try and relive his youth by starting in the strikers role . The strength of Storm Desmond had seen Will.i.am Lewis arrive back a day early from his weekly commute from the Big Apple ( I didn’t have the heart to ask him what sort of top up that involved on an oyster card ) and Bryan “the cat “ King answered the call to talk his place between the sticks.
We started going downhill with the wind at our backs but it was Windmore who were creating the better chances and at halftime they had hit the woodwork twice compared to our once but we were unable to take advantage of the conditions and put the ball in the net . Turning round into the teeth of the gale and going uphill made it very difficult to move the ball forward and left us on the back foot as the Hill literally did keep coming down the hill at us. Matt Piner who had flown half way round the world for his first game in 18 months decided to mark that achievement by giving away a penalty which all but the ref agreed was slightly harsh. One became two and three but we kept battling and were now starting to create some chances. Will.i.am Lewis was proceeding to take a near world record number of goal kicks but it was from a free kick around the area that our goal came. Brough the younger floated in a delightful free kick which was flicked onto by John for new boy Alex to head home. We really started pushing forward and it was from another free kick by Max Brough that saw the goalie pull off an excellent save which would have bought us right back into the game.
Overall the conditions made our free flowing passing game very difficult but then that has been true of a lot of pitches we have played on this year. So lots of positives from the past in the form of Joe, Will.i.am Lewis and Matt, the present with John Puddlefact and the future with Max Brough and Alex Yiassoumis (my spell checker nearly passed out with that one)
