We took our strongest squad of the season up to OGs for what would be a day of pros and cons…
Pro. Garchonians pitch was an absolute carpet. Con. City mappers quickest route suggested I get a train to Boreham Wood to get there. Pro. Ronnie gave me a lift. Con. We got lost and ended up at a cattery on more than one occasion. Pro. We put in our best performance of the season. Con. We still have 0 points to show for it.
A back and forth game of really good quality, we played with a confidence that belied our absolute pumpings of the last few months.
We started well, and took the lead through a slightly bizarre Matt Kelly goal. Garchonians are a good side and they will be up there this season. That said, their offside trap was kamikaze and gave us 3/4 good chances in the first half alone. Matt got in behind and through what definitely wasn’t a mishit chip, gave us the lead.
We could, possibly should have extended that, but Garchs worked their back into the game and began to dominate. Egan was left to learn the hard way, that mazy dribbles are both a threat to our chances of keeping a clean sheet, but also to the health of a man of his age (he went off injured after 30).
All credit to OGs, both of their first half goals were great quality finishes and they went in 2-1 up with all the momentum.
Our second half performance was brilliant. We picked ourselves up and came flying back. Our lads in the middle moved the ball well, our widemen worked their socks off, and Ronnie and Matt were a constant threat. They combined to draw us level with 10 minutes left to play, a really nice move set Ron away and he squared for Matt to tap home. 2-2.
With the wind in our sails, we went all Robshaw (rugby reference there, not a fan but topical) and pushed for the win. We conceded two minutes later. A ball in behind caught us out, and we had blown in. 3-2.
More positives than negatives and comfortably our best performance of the year. We are still leaking goals due to silly errors but also poor defensive shape. We are quite easy to play through as a team at the moment, not through any lack of work, more so basic team shape.
That said, I know if we match that level of performance, and importantly, availability, results will improve. Just need a bit of consistency in what John has available.
