Alexandra Park 7s 3 – Alexandra Park 8s 4

SAL Minor Div 3 North | October 3, 2015

Scorers: Gouveia, OG, Parker

Losing a keepers the last minute is never a good thing, and in our pre-match crisis conference Jamie valiantly volunteered to take the gloves. He might have been regretting that after 2 minutes, when we were 1-0 after their first attack of the game. Granted there wasn’t much he could have done to stop the header at point blank range, it was poorly defended and we were caught cold. Matters got worse when a speculative shot from Jenkins came back off the bar and Marco was quickest off the mark to put them 2-0 up. We had a lot of work to do. We dug deep and battled back into the game. We got a foothold through Scants corner which was met by David to head home, 1-2. This goal gave us hope, as did the arrival of Paul in goal who had come last minute to rescue us. When a through ball was headed into his own net by Cem to level the game I thought our luck had turned. We were on the up and looking to take a lead into half time. But we were hit by a sucker punch, we got too cocky trying to play the ball out of defence and got caught, with the 8s stealing the ball and finding an unmarked player at the back post to put them 3-2 up.

We still had hope at half time with us now playing down the hill we felt we had a good chance of getting something from the game. But just when we didn’t need it Mike scythed down their forward in the box for a blatant penalty. It was knocked into the bottom left. Paul said he thought about diving that way. He didn’t. 4-2, and it was a long way back. With 15 to go John’s work rate paid off and he pulled one back but it was too little too late. Even with Paul charging upfield for the last minute corner another chance was lost. In reality we didn’t test Gus nearly as much as we should have and too many errors cost us dearly. On this evidence all areas of the pitch need working on.
