Scorers: Lepkowski(2), Fletcher
Out of the Vets Cup at the first hurdle – again – but this was a creditable display by the Vets considering the number of changes from the game two weeks ago (versus the 10s) and the calibre of the opposition. There were several excellent individual performances with Tony Walsh outstanding at the back, Janno in the middle, Gerry Lepkowski with two more goals, and Kurt Hedgley again barking out orders – just like the old days!
Kicking off downhill, AP nearly took the lead early on when Janno shot wide with only the keeper to beat. A costly miss, I felt. AP went ahead when Walsh’s through ball to Gerry McKeown split the N21 defence. His effort was blocked but the loose ball fell to Fletch who shot into the roof of the net. WH equalised with a header at the far post but AP continued to play well, closing the oppo down quickly and creating some clear cut chances; chances we missed which would come back to haunt us later on. WH scored two more with King beaten by a deflection and a low shot into the corner to leave us 3-1 down at the break.
Now playing uphill, AP got right back into the game with two quick goals from Gerry Lepowski. The first was a penalty and then a bullet from 25 yards into the top corner. A cracking goal and WH were rattled. 3-3. This optimism didn’t last though as tiredness and mistakes saw AP concede three more in the closing stages. I bet WH don’t get as hard a game in the next round.
Overall, a good day spent with some old friends. Well done to Brian Edwards for organising the team, which reminds me, where exactly is Mark Smith?
