Alexandra Park 10s 1 – Old Lyonians 5s 4

SAL Junior Novets Cup | September 19, 2015

Scorer: Batt

When the location came out for this game I did ask Nigel why we were playing at Preston Park Wembley rather than Albert Road, “ its not ready yet “ was his reply. With the papers full of Spurs and Chelsea trying to move to Wembley while their grounds are being redeveloped it got me thinking that the rumoured second portacabin was actually being put in place at Albert Road so that the team wouldn’t have to get changed 3 at a time.

Returning to Captaincy after a few years it was good to see the willingness of people to help out. Nigel “ kit man “ Bagley had very kindly sorted the kit out from the remnants of previous seasons found in the boiler room. “ have I got 14 shirts “ I asked, the kit man replied “ I think you will find you have a few more than that “. Anyway when we arrived at Preston Park we did in fact have 12 !!! 10 quid to play with the chance of wearing someone elses shirt, that’s what I call inflation since my last game.

The pitch looked like John Morris had taken umbridge about the comments about his in ability to fill in a hole a couple of weeks ago and had attempted to relay the whole thing by torchlight, but more of that later.

The opposition arrived late and it wasn’t until 3.30 that the game got underway. We started brightly after our 1 hour warm up and a great though ball by Batt saw Jenkins with a great first touch which he put narrowly wide. We were competing all over the pitch against a very fast and strong Old Lyonians side and it was against the run of play that they went one nil up with Bafta Boy aka Paul Andrew Williams being beaten by a fierce shot from the edge of the area. We responded well and it was a great ball from the left foot of James Kennedy that enabled Batt to nip in and finish to draw us level. That is the way it stayed for the next 10 minutes before we conceded a penalty and Bafta Boy stood no chance with the finished. Old Lyonians then continued to put us under the cosh and one more before half time saw us finish the half 3-1 down. In the break we changed it around and bought Jenkins into midfield to provide some protection to the back 4 who looked liked they were auditioning for the remake of the Alamo such was the frequency of the attacks raining down on them. The pitch was causing a few problems with the surface making fine flowing football tricky but I am not going to blame the Morris man for our defeat. We only conceded one more in the second half and with Swift coming on up front we could have scored a couple ourselves. Bafta Boy was great in goal while John at center back covered up for the odd poor touch from the skipper. Jenkins, Heath and Brough the younger gave there all in midfield while Kennedy at left back ( not his usual position ) provided some great distribution to the forwards.

Our first game and if this is to be the standard then we will need to be fitter, close the opposition down quicker and take our chances if we are to compete.
