Alexandra Park 5s 4 – Southgate Olympic 4s 0

SAL Minor Div 2 North | April 25, 2015

Scorers: Fortucci, Bowhill, Wilson, Dodimead

Well that is it! Last game of the season done and dusted…and as a team we can be very proud that we have finished the season as invincibles (Invencibles)! An incredible achievement and put that next to only conceding 7 goals in 18 league games is extremely impressive! Andy Sievewright must be on the record books as we have kept 13 clean sheets this season and Sievewright has kept 11* of those!

This game could have been a piss about but with all the lads knowing what was at stake it was a very competitive game. It was ironic that we were trying to level a 25 year old SAL record of goals conceded (7) by Southgate Olympic!

To be honest we started this game very slowly and SG had by far the majority of possession and were getting themselves into more threatening positions. A great save from Sievewright kept the score level and they also hit the side netting which they should have scored from. However when we dropped Wilson a bit deeper to compensate for their extra midfielder we started to get a stranglehold on the game. All of our goals on saturday were great goals and the first set the ball rolling. Great work from Doyle and Hyde on the left hand side saw a delicious ball delivered for the impressive Fortucci to put a bullet header past the goalkeeper. We were 1-0 just before half time…classic AP5 play!

The second half remained competitive but we started to find the space and started to pull Southgate apart. Rich Bowhill’s goal was pure class…I’ve played with him for three seasons now and I don’t think I’ve seen him hit a ball as true as he did for our second goal. An absolute thunderbolt rising into the top corner! What a beauty!!

Chris Wilson and Matt Dodimead got our third and fourth goals. Matt Dodimead smashed home after great trickery from Rae. Wilson scored a rare headed goal which takes his tally up to 11 goals. All three of our strikers (Wilson will argue as he was in midfield for a lot of games) have done a great job this season on securing important points! There has been a lot of praise for the defence but without our strikers we wouldn’t have won any of our tight games. Knight, Dodimead and Wilson ended the season on 11 goals each….that’s 33 of our 58 goals in the league!

This was my last game as captain and I’m very proud of all the lads for their commitment and enthusiasm every single game. Being captain isn’t always the most enjoyable role but this group of lads have made the role a lot more easier. Now we must look towards next season with (hopefully) James Rae in charge and we can aim for another invincible season…right???

*(Gustavo kept one clean sheet, Tobias getting the other…big thanks lads).
