Old Actonians 5s 3 – Alexandra Park 5s 2

AFA Senior Novets Cup | November 1, 2014

Scorers: Asberg, Byrne-Nelson

So last Saturday saw our first defeat of the season, but thankfully it was in the cup against decent opposition. Having said that it is a game we should have won and we were desperately unlucky to have been knocked out.

There were many positives to be taken from the game as we absolutely dominated the first half and could of gone 3-0 up in the first 25 minutes. But this game was just not going to go our way. We conceded a sloppy goal from a corner, and Old Actonians were 1-0 up after their first real attempt on target. Dodimead and Knight went close to getting us off the mark but unfortunately we couldn’t find that equaliser before half time. Plus losing the energetic Doyle to injury was a big loss early on in the first half.

The second half was a bit of a farce and was unfortunately our downfall. We seemed to lose a bit of our momentum and went 2-0 down and it looked like the end was nigh however the game took so many twists, but none in our favour. We got a goal back through Asberg. It probably was our hardest chance of the game but Asberg finished well. We were then awarded a penalty which unfortunately we missed. Actonians then hit us with an absolute thunderbolt which unfortunately myself couldn’t keep out. Another 5s debut Patrick Byrne- Nelson got us a second to put us back in contention and shortly after we were awarded a second penalty. However the 5s were obviously cursed and the GK made a decent save and we couldn’t get the equalizer to push the game into extra time.

So positives are that we didn’t play particularly well but we still should of won and now we don’t have a cup distraction for our league games. However with a tough game against Old Lyonians this Saturday we are going to have to try and re group and get another win.

Onwards and upwards 5s!!
