Nigel Bagley’s AP Dream Team
Goalkeeper | ANDY SIEVEWRIGHT | Former first XI keeper back in the day still doing the business in our 3s and 4s after a few years out of the game. Might have to be home only though!! |
Left Back | MARTIN EGAN | A leader and organiser on the pitch and good value in the bar after! The word competitive doesn’t quite do Martin justice. |
Centre back | ALEX PATTERSON | A former member of the 8s Academy where I taught him everything. A born stopper: quick on the deck, good in the air and tackles anything that moves. If the ball is there – even better. Just what you need at the back with… |
Centre Back | BRIAN EDWARDS | …Taff. Slow, no good in the air and would just “nick” the ball from opponents, but boy could he read the game. The best sweeper I’ve seen at AP. Composure personified. |
Right Back | DUNCAN ANDERSON | To say DA went through the pain barrier in his playing time at AP is an understatement. His commitment to the AP cause cost him many weeks on the side-lines with injuries, but in his day he was quick and brave. For me, he was a captain’s dream. Not many would get past him and Egan! |
Left midfield | RICHARD GIBBS | You know him as our beloved Subscriptions Officer, but in his pomp (the 90s) RG was like sh*t off a shovel down the left wing for the 3s, 4s and 5s at AP satellite grounds such as Metal Box and Bush Hill Park. Could beat his man and deliver quality crosses with either foot. IPA please, Richard! |
Central midfield | JED WOOD | The archetypal box to box midfielder. A shy lad but with awesome ability. Lacked ambition while at the club and should have been a 1s player but didn’t want it. Now at Haringey Borough, ironically. |
Central midfield | MICKEY SANGER | A maverick but undoubtedly one of the most talented players ever to grace the Racecourse and a top bloke too. Great passing range, full of tricks and scorer of some outrageous goals. Could beat teams on his own. In this midfield, Jed would do all the running while Mickey would apply the magic. Still turns out for the Vets. |
Right Midfield | OLLY TOLCHER | Has got the lot: skill, time on the ball, vision, pace etc. I had the fortune to play alongside him up top for the 8s last year. It was great fun. All his goals are corkers too. If only he could prise himself away from the comfort zone of the 6s… all the best with the new baby, Olly! |
Centre Forward | HUGH GILLEN | An out and out finisher back in the early 90s. Didn’t do much outside the box but was deadly in it. Scored all sorts of goals from screamers to tap ins. Good in the air too. A good lad but a Man Utd fan. |
Centre Forward | ASHLEY BRADE | So much natural ability he should be in the 1s. Always in the running for AP’s Golden Boot, which is even more impressive when he has to play out wide in the 3s to accommodate Kurt. Enough said! Plays with a smile. |
Subs | Martin Smith (GK), Simon Tolcher, Kurt Hedgley, Matt Kelly, Adam Bruce, Mike Graves, Richie Hancock, Fevzi Demir. | |
Manager | NB, with Amit Bose as assistant. (Get a challenge in!!) |
