Alexandra Park 7s 2 – Old Blues Reserves 2

Spring Cup | March 24, 2012

We were greeted by a bright sunny Albert Road, with the smell of spring in the air and a firm pitch underfoot. The Old Blues were already at the ground before us, clearly very eager for a game of football against the legends of the North. Bit by bit our team turned up, some still looking half asleep after being on the lash the night before, not that they admitted to it in any way shape of form.

The match kicked off in warm humid temperatures, a young Old Blues team full of enthusiasm and running had us on the defensive for the first few minutes. As always our golden oldies take a little bit of time to warm up and work the gremlins out the system, but just like a mature fine wine they never let you down in the end. As the half professed we got more and more into the game. As we started racking up the chances it seemed only a matter of time before we got the break we needed. Our persistence eventually paid off when half a chance fell to Darren who gave us an impressive lead.

A short time later we won a penalty, the normally reliable, outstanding Josh hitting his penalty soft which left the keeper with an easy save. Needless to say, lady luck was not smiling, straight from our miss they launched a counter attack and equalized.

As we moved into the second half the Blues launched a real fightback, a ball into the box, which should have been cleared by our defenders with ease was allowed to crawl across the goal, allowing their forward an easy finish, giving poor Mr King no Chance.

Now in many of our games this season we have faded and shipped goals in towards the end of the match, but today was to be different as we rolled our sleeves up and launched a number of counter attacks, we just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net. But as they say cometh the 75 minute, cometh the man! Is it a bird? Is it a plane?….no its the crazy Viking Torque, rolling back the years, he elegantly curled a 15, no 20, no 25 yarder into the corner of the net, Gooooalll we were level, I thought Cantona had just come on the field and worked his magic, but no it was our omni present legend Torque who saved us at the end and secured a vital point. Bring on the 8s, rumor has it their recent form has them shivering in the boots for Saturday’s big match.

Roll on the weekend!
