Alexandra Park 7s 3 – Broomfield 6s 2

League | December 3, 2011

After our loss last weekend that brought our 4 match unbeaten run to an end it was important to get our season back on track with a good result. We knew that Broomfield would be a formidable team to overcome with a well organised skilfull team that were full of running from the off.

Within the first few minutes our defence were tested with pressure from the Broomfield forwards, with attacks coming down both wings and down the middle. The Defence however held strong and worked as a unit neutralising the danger with comfort. Laurant making a couple of great challenges to thwart the danger of the Broomfield forwards. As the match progressed we grew in confidence, with the midfield and the forwards linking up well and keeping good possession of the ball. James and Richard started to dominate possession in the middle of the field and this resulted in good chances for Josh and Darren in attack. We were rewarded for our efforts when Mr Tullet was brought down in the box. Darren calmely stepped up to bang away his 4th penalty of the season. Well done Darren thats 4 out of 4 now!

We were firmly in control of game by now and the opposition started to get frustrated. This resulted in a couple of bad tackles and dissent from their team towards the ref. Things nearly boiled over when their number 12 jumped for a header with Dino. Dino stood his ground and won the header. The player nearly wet himself and accused the ref of being biased by not giving them a free kick. His 4 letter rant “”#22 F#888K, Bas***D, C***”” to the ref got him booked and nearly sent off.

As the half wore on we got better and better. We won a free kick 25 yards out. As usual we had a number of players eager to take the free kick but as they say “”comeh the our, cometh the man”” up stepped Josh to bury a curling 25 yarder into the back of the net. 2-0 fantastic!!!

In the second half the opposition had the wind behind them and the sun in our keepers eyes, started to crank up the pressure. wave after wave of attack saw them carve out good chances.

It was Scott in goal who kept our lead preserved with a string of outstanding saves. Evenutally their pressure paid off with a great shot from their number 12 which even Scott could not keep out.

As the half wore on their threw more and more players forward, this left them vunerable at the back and we nearly punished them on the break but we failed to put away our chances.

It was Broomfields turn to mount another attack and finally they got the break they needed with a neat finish which leveled the score, 2-2!!!!

I think we all feared the worst at this point as our legs were getting tired and the opposition has their tails up. Would we hold out?? ……..Yes we would, a great break down the middle saw the ball released to Josh who calmly beat the keeper to give us a 3-2 lead!!! Victory was in sight!!… We held for the last few minutes and were relieved to hear the final whistle which confirmed our 3 points. A much needed 3 points which helps us slowly but surely climb off the foot of the table. Well done boys!
