Alexandra Park 6s 0 – Old Parkonians 6s 1

SAL Intermediate Cup (Second Round) | November 26, 2011

Arriving at a windy Racecourse last Saturday, I was worried that, with some of the usual suspects missing, we’d struggle to field a competitive team with the usual 6s team spirit. There was no need for the doubts, as the return of Messrs Kanybekov, Scantlebury and Dawkins together with 5s Piner and Burwell, brought a real sense of urgency and commitment to the team. Although matters weren’t helped when a certain United States of “what time is kick off in New River?” player travelled to the wrong ground and ended up missing the kick off!! Ahem.

As the wind was strong and judging by previous performances on the front pitch we decided to play up the hill, and string 5 across the midfield in the first half. The plan seemed to be working, with Craig playing well up front on his own, aided by some intelligent running from midfield by Nathan, and as a team we were unlucky not to take some chances. At times it looked like we could easily beat this Old Parks team, as we passed the ball confidently, making progress, especially down the left wing. Tricky winger, Jack D making life tough for the Old Parks right back. If we could only hold out until half time at 0-0 we should be able to turn the screw in the 2nd half. Alas, 30 minutes in, we were 1-0 down, Old Parks scoring from a corner, albeit from an AP deflection. That was the bulk of Old Parks chances in the 1st half. Any long range efforts were dealt comfortably by the big man in goals and helped by the committed back 4 in front of him.

At half time we promised to throw off the shackles and really have a go in the 2nd half.  From a number of free kicks, John Scant whipped in some good crosses but alas, no end product ensued. You know how this author loves his end product! Frustration was now growing, as a foul on Olly, forced him to retort, “I’ll F*** you up man”. Teams will have to realise we can’t have Olly losing his edge! The arrival of Andy and Spencer added further impetus but at times we took the wrong option and with desperation taking over, the route one tactic prevailed. Credit must go to the whole team in trying to play football in difficult conditions on the day.

Forget about this one lads, roll on next Saturday and a return to winning ways in the league.

Team: Manuel Veth, Matt Piner (Andy Burwell), Uli Kanybekov, Anthony Shaw, Harald Krefting, Olly Edge, Mel Loughnane, John Scantlebury, Jack Dudmish, Craig Dawkins (Spencer Brooks), Nathan Mellows.
