Old Salvatorian’s 6s 1 – Alexandra Park 6s 1 (2-3 pens)

AFA Intermediate Novets Cup (First Round) | October 8, 2011

Three wins on the trot and this team is really motoring now. Turning up at the Old Salvatorian’s grounds last Saturday, I’m sure all present were well impressed with the clubs facilities and playing pitches, with the good looking girl behind the reception desk, a welcome bonus also.

The team played with great purpose, the back four looking solid, the midfield knocking the ball around confidently and the two up front offering an outlet throughout the 1st half. The highlight being a Richard Fryer shot that cannoned off the O.S cross bar. The A.P opener came from a speculative shot from Zee German himself, Harald, which rebounded off the cross bar and an alert Olly Edge knocked-in the opener. Reassessing matters at half time, we agreed that the team were playing well, but we couldn’t relax and needed to keep the pressure on.

The 2nd half saw O.S team apply further pressure with our goalie MO keeping us in the game on more than one occasion. The O.S equaliser was surrounded in controversy. As with previous weeks, with minimal contact, the opposition striker fell to the ground as if gunned down by a Taliban sniper. The O.S penalty taker duly punished us with a well taken spot kick. The 90 minutes finished 1-1 and the AP troops rallied in extra time with a few glorious chances missed (ahem), the game had penalty shoot-out written all over it!

And so to the penalties, we won 3-2 with great spot kicks from Spencer, Richard and Dec. Equally impressive was the big Aussie in goals. Some great saves. Keep it up big man.

Roll on the next round!
