Alan J Drake

It was with great sadness that the Club learned last Friday of the untimely death of Alan Drake just a few days short of his 66th birthday.

His funeral will take place on Wednesday 6 March at 2.00 pm at New Southgate Crematorium,  Brunswick Park Road, N11 1JJ.  Afterwards at Muswell Hill Golf Club.

Alan’s involvement and commitment to the Club was outstanding. He was of the generation when parents met through sport in the days of the cricket and lawn tennis club. His involvement therefore began at a very early age – in his pram on summer weekends!

We know Alan was scoring regularly for the 1st XI by 1964 when the Broadsheet first began. His father, Jack, was then a first eleven player and doubtless he didn’t have much option!

Alan played his first senior game for APCC in 1967 at the age of 14. He Captained the Club’s 2nd XI for two seasons (1981/1982) and went on to Captain the 1st XI with distinction over 7 seasons (1984/1990). He made his first visit to the APCC Kent Tour in 1965 and joined his first full Kent Tour in 1969. In his first outing he took 4 for 40 in Sandwich Town’s inning of 208 for 7 declared for which feat he was awarded the Big Head Medal.

Alan demonstrated his commitment to the AP Club over many years serving as Chairman of the Management Committee for 13 terms before standing down in 2007. He also filled in as Treasurer for 2 terms (2002/2004). When Alan stood down as AP Club Chairman he took on the role of APCC Chairman for 3 terms (2007/2009). He was rightly elected an Honorary Life Member of The Alexandra Park Club in 2008.

In parallel with his love of cricket Alan was an outstanding golfer. He played at Muswell Hill Golf Club from his mid-teens and quickly achieved a handicap of 1. Alan represented both MHGC and Middlesex at senior competitive level for many years. He served as Captain of MHGC in its Centenary year (1993) and chaired the Board from 2009 to 2012. He was elected an Honorary Life Member in 2016.

It is difficult to properly record Alan’s exceptional commitment to Club life in so many areas. A long-standing Life Member, John Heale, recorded the following:

“Alan, like his father, was a great sportsman able to play any game with a natural ability. His love of cricket and Alexandra Park CC was coupled with so many achievements on the Golf Course and his long membership of Muswell Hill Golf Club. He will be sorely missed by so many and I am certainly one of those.”

We record thanks to Alan for all he gave to the Club over so many years. AP will be the poorer without him.
