After the thrashing of the previous week in the AFA Cup it was time to try and pick up our first points in the league but with a strong squad assembled we took to the field in confident mood.
A.P. started strongly and we were stroking the ball around the pitch with confidence. The oppo were finding it hard to contain Gerry and Ross upfront and with the two Smiths in central midfield we were stifling the oppo’s infrequent attacks.
From a flowing move down the right between Paul M and Janno the ball was collected by Ross who put Gerry in to side-foot past their keeper.
We were well in the ascendancy and had a number of chances to extend our lead but these went begging which meant that the oppo still had the belief they could get something from the game.
So 1-0 at half time.
With only 2 subs we started to run out of steam in the last 25 mins and started to defend deeper and deeper giving the oppo more space and time in midfield.
An attack down our right saw the oppo forward get goal side of the defence and then with a defender next to him, fall over – an Oscar is in the post – the ref bought it and gave a penalty which Gus got his hand to.
We had a couple of chances, Janno putting one just past the post but on the whole the game petered out for a draw.
As a squad we are still getting our fitness up to 11-a-side standard and learning to play together especially with some players having to play out of position. On that note well done to German, Daron and Wayne who all put a shift in.
Those tasty 3 points will be arriving soon I’m sure….
