Scorers: Arowosafe, N’Gola
With the top New River pitch passing an early morning inspection the 4s took on Norsemen 4s in the league. The reverse fixture in December had ended in a 6-1 defeat so we knew we had to be “on it” for the full 90 to get something out of the game.
The game started fairly evenly with both sides creating a few half chances with the best one for AP falling to McCley, who with his first touch of the game hit a great half volley but was denied by a great save by the Norsemen keeper denying him a dream debut. Norsemen’s centre forward was causing us a few problems with his strength and pace but some good defending from the back 4 denied him any clear cut chances. As the half progressed we started to get a bit of rhythm going, moving the ball around well and about 25 mins in were awarded a penalty for a foul on Osyindu. Arowosafe sent the keeper the wrong way to give us a 1-0 lead. The game continued being fairly even with both sides continuing to create chances. Norsemen went down to 10 men just before half time when one of their midfielders turned his ankle in a 50/50 in the middle of the park and was unable to continue.
Half time we reempahsised the need to keep our concentration and try to get a second to kill the game off. With the man advantage we were having more of the ball and getting in some good scoring positions but we were failing to take due to a bit of over elaboration. Norsemen were looking to play on the counter but with the pitch deteriorating and Jones running a tight ship at the back they failed to trouble Kopsala in goal. We extended our lead after a Norsemen attack broke down and a few quick passes up the pitch saw N’Gola finish smartly after an initial save by their keeper. A very good team performance where we defended solidly, rewarded with a clean sheet, and also played some nice passing football on a very difficult pitch.
