Scorers: Forbes, Dodimead
And so it begins again…another season for the 5s to get stuck in and try and replicate last seasons success. And what a start with a solid victory against tricky opponents and we have set the ball rolling already. Although the score line suggests a narrow victory it was a pleasing sight that we were comfortable for large spells in this game, plus we had two goals disallowed by Dodimead and Robertson. The latter also hit the crossbar with a delicious lob that deserved to go in.
We arrived at Oakhill Park on time for us to hang around for half an hour until our opposition arrived, special mention goes to Josh Hyde who made a journey from Peckham to play at East Barnet, worth the 90 minute journey!
One thing the 5s will have to improve is how we start games as we were very sluggish to get going and Old Finchleians got at us and seemed more up for the game than us. However Sievewright didn’t come up against too many shots on target apart from a speculative long range effort which he tipped over the bar.
As we started to get a foothold in the game, moving the ball out wide and getting support to Dodimead, we looked very dangerous and made a few good chances. We were very unlucky to go one down, as they scored a fantastic/flukey goal straight from a corner. Our heads seemed to drop instantly which is a something we’ll have to get over as we are in a more difficult league this year, so we are potentially going to let in a few more goals than we did last season. However with James Rae as captain, he is a top motivator and got our minds back on the game and soon after conceding the effective Forbes was brought down in the area and we had our chance to equalise.
This seemed to bring up the biggest talking point of the match as there was a little confusion of who was going to take the penalty. Robertson seemed the favourite to take it but up stepped Dodimead. There was slight confusion at the halfway line as Rae double checked to see if Dodimead was sure if he wanted to take the penalty. Matt said he wanted it but at half time he revealed how he was “bricking it”! It was a great penalty however as he dispatched it into the bottom corner with ease.
The second half was all AP and the opposition couldn’t live with us. Our passing was brilliant, working the ball from left to right with ease. Korek impressed in the centre of the park with his energy and tenacity. The defence were solid as usual and constantly linked up with the midfield well to start off attacks. Seb Bell showed good skill and calmness on the ball when coming on and Kopsala showed some great touches and gave OFs wing backs a torrid time. We had two goals disallowed in the second half, Dodimead had a header ruled offside (wrongly) and Robertson had a delightful goal disallowed (wrongly). We scored the winner when Kopsala linked up with Doyle, who then delivered an exceptional cross to the back post for Forbes to sneak in a header.
We came under a little bit of late pressure but nothing substantial and we sealed a win on the first game of the season, hopefully the first of many! The excitement obviously translated into many beers at the clubhouse and extended to The Lexington in Angel, old habits die hard!
The 5th Team shall be very excited with the news of the much anticipated 4s V 5s game on the 26th September….gutted I shall be missing the next 4 weeks of games but hopefully when and if I return, our season shall be definitely up and running in the right direction!
