Scorers: T.Spencer(2), Copeland
The penultimate game of the 4s season saw us travel to Potters Bar for the first of a home-and-home series against relegation threatened Old Owens. With a fair few regular missing meant AP debuts for Copeland, Pattrick and Whiles with keeper Roethel coming up from the 6s.
To describe the start of the match as “scrappy” would be doing both teams a compliment but once we had started to get to terms with the windy conditions and everyone learning each others names, you couldn’t go wrong with ‘Tom’, we started to look dangerous creating a few half chances via Kenga and Spencer. We took the lead on the quarter hour following a Kenga corner to the front post which Spencer eventually bundled over the line. The back four had been dealing fairly comfortably with Owens long ball tactics but a collective moment of lost concentration saw their striker run on to a flick-on to level the score. It didn’t take long for us to shake this off and keep on playin’ as we took back the lead shortly afterwards with Copeland heading another Kenga cross into the top corner to gives us a 2-1 halftime lead.
Halftime talk was to try and keep the ball on the ground to counter the wind and to help get Andi Smith get more involved as he had spent the majority of the first half watching the ball fly over his head.
The first 20 mins after the restart were all AP with the midfield dominating and the forwards creating a number of half chances including a Spencer drive that the Owens keeper did very well to keep out. Owens main threat was coming from their tricky #8 but all his good work was coming to very little with Roethel rarely troubled and even having time to channel his inner Manuel Neuer and look to take a throw in before a collective “No” made him change his mind. We got the third goal we deserved with about 10 mins left with Kenga once again being the provider with a driven ball from the left that the onrushing Spencer giving the keeper no chance.
