Scorers: Asberg, Gatenby, Tolcher
The 4s started their 2014-15 league campaign with an always tricky away trip to Old Finchleans 5s. As seems to be the case this season we had a fair amount of new faces, with the 4s now mandatory foreign contigent, along with a smattering of players returning from last years campaign.
The first 15 mins of the game have very much the feel of the first league game of the season with a lot of scrappy play and neither team getting out of first gear. We slowly started to take control of the game with the midfield trio of Lagos, Biss and Tolcher winning almost everything in the centre of the park and spreading the play wide down the wings. Our first chance came from a corner with Fox, our number 10 wearing left back, unable to get solid contact at the back post and directing his header wide. As the first half went on Tolcher started finding more space “in the hole” between the OF midfield and defence and created a couple of chances for new recruit Paddy Byrne-Nelson and Gatenby which were both smartly saved by the keeper. Despite our dominance the best chance of the half fell to OF just before half time when their striker found himself one on one with Thompson who pulled off a point blank save to keep the score 0-0 at the break.
We started the second half positively and took the lead about 5 mins in to the 2nd half when Fox won the ball back at left back and played the ball down the line to Paddy who went past his marker and played a low ball across the penalty box which the on rushing Asberg to lash home to score within 10 mins of his debut. Our goal forced OF to go on the attack and we started to concede possesion in the centre of the park but the back four were up to anything that they could throw at us. Long came on for Tolcher in centre mid and Gauci replaced McGlogan at centre back and both got straight down to business with Gauci in particular putting in some solid chances on the OF forwards and winning everything in the air. With OF pushing men forward with started to hit them on the counter with Forbes and Asberg finding acres of space on the flanks to run at their fullbacks and create a number of half chances. We extended our lead with about 10 minutes to go when Gatenby held up the ball with his back to goal, turned his marker and wrong footed the keeper. OF’s heads dropped at this point and we hit them on the break again in the last minute of play with Tolcher capping a great performance with a well deserved goal from a Gatenby cutback and give a bit of gloss to the final score.
As an added bonus we also had possibly the only blogging referee in the AFA who wrote up his view of the game: http://afareferee. wordpress.com/2014/09/14/old-finchleiansv- 0-3-alexandra-park-iv/
