After suffering our first defeat of the season last week to Old Parks, the 7XI made the trip to Old Finchleans in hope of getting back to our unbeaten ways. There was a real sense of optimism in the air as we waited outside the lovely changing rooms for the oppo’ who turned up about 20 minutes before kick-off.
Determined to get back into good form, we started the game well and looked comfortable on the ball, with Tom and Jack.C working well together in the middle. Despite our good start however we went 1-0 down inside the first 15 with Old Finchlean managing to score which was probably their first chance of the game.
Although we conceded early we did really well to keep our heads up and continue our bright start, with Lewis causing all sorts of problems down the right side, along with Charlie causing manic up top. We managed to produce chance after chance but just couldn’t seem to score, when eventually we were rewarded a penalty for something I’m not quite sure of as I was busy being elbowed by one of the opposition players. Anyways, Tommy stepped up and tucked it away neatly into the bottom right corner which was celebrated with our trademark bird celebration – even if it was only an equaliser!
Up until half-time it was all AP, and we even managed to threaten in the air, with Simon getting on to everything from set pieces and coming close a few times. We pressed for our second before the break but it didn’t come, despite Jack.D, Charlie and Lewis each coming close. HT 1-1.
The second half begun and we looked to carry on our dominance but it took a while for the game to really get going. It seemed that the half time break had taken it out of us for a while as we struggled to create chances, and with the oppo’ defence playing so deep it made it more difficult to utilise Charlie’s pace up top.
With around 20 minutes left until full time both teams went on in search of that all-important second goal. The second penalty of the game was given when skipper Will Dudmish absolutely crunched the Finchlean striker who was through on goal. P.s Will, can you not make this giving away pens thing a habit, that’s two on the trot now! Luckily for us the oppo captain blazed the pen wide.
The game finished at 1-1 and in the end up it felt like two points lost rather than a point gained, which is probably due to amount of chances we created but couldn’t take. Despite that we gave a solid performance, the defence was outstanding, the midfield linked up well together, and Charlie up top contributed well. Let’s just make sure we bring our shooting boots next week!
MOTM goes to Lewis, who as well as being a constant threat going forward, also gave great cover to keep the oppo’s tricky winger out of the game.
Roll on next week, let’s get back to winning ways!
