Scorers: Gatenby x 2, Robinson, Wellman, Morris
With our regular scribe injured way back in September (when is Mr Reynolds back???) a match report has been sorely missing for the mighty 4s. After our disappointing performance last week in the semi-final of the cup we knew this game was a must win against Broomfield to move away from the relegation zone (how are we still in this position???!!!).
With our “Rapid” Geordie leader deciding last week’s cup exit was too much to take he handed the power over to Pat. With the weekly cry offs dealt with we lined up with a strong team of Edelman in goal, a back four of Harry, Pat, Stu and Murphy. With Denzel running a little late we had a 5 man midfield of James, Carl, Seb, Jacko and Charles answering the call to come up from the 5s. That left John Gatenby upfront to kick lumps out of their defence.
We started brightly knowing that a few early goals would upset this team. But this being the 4s we like to do it the hard way. After we’d created a few half decent chances we fell behind when their nippy striker sprung the offside trap and slotted past Steve. When I say sprung the offside trap he was 5 yards offside but the ref didn’t notice. We stopped trying to play offside and just defended a little deeper which limited Broomfield to a few half chances.
Up the other end Gatenby was upto his usual tricks putting their defence under pressure and forcing some corners. Jacko delivered one to John which he couldn’t miss to draw us level. Soon after we got another when some good work from Seb and Charlie in midfield saw Seb square to Carl from 6 yards who finished neatly. James was causing havoc with his “Delapesque” long throws and we got the 3rd from one of these throws when John jumped with the goalie to head home. 3-1 AP much to the protest of the Broomfield goalie who claimed he had been sliced open!
At half time Pat gave one of his inspirational speeches about playing the ball and how Broomfield would implode. With these words ringing in our ears we took out foot off the gas and let Broomfield back into the game. With two hopeful punts up field they managed to equalise by a combination of defence not closing down fast enough and some strange refereeing. 3-3 game on. We took this as our inspiration to restore the two goal lead. First Denzel cut in from the left and unleashed a rocket of a shot into the roof of the net from 25 yards. With around 10 to go a long punt up field from Steve saw Jacko in one on one. This normally results in Jacko taking out the sand wedge to try and chip the goalie. He didn’t let us down but on this occasion he scored a beaut. 3 points in the bag and the McGlogan interim managerial master class gathers pace.
All in all a good team performance except for the ten minutes after half time when we let them back into the game. Steve in goal was rarely troubled and was left with no chance for the goals. Defensively we looked strong as a unit with Stu and Pat coming up with some cracking tackles when required. Harry grew into the game and provided some great attacking support in the second half. Midfield were solid with Seb and Carl battling away as usual. Charles played well on his debut and James Earle was a constant threat on the left with his crossing and long throws. Up front John got his reward for another afternoons hard graft, with Denzel and Jacko being rewarded with a goal apiece for some thankless running.
We’ve now reached the halfway point of the league campaign and with 10 games to go we should give it a real go. The teams in front of us are no great shakes and how we are in this position towards the bottom of the table baffles us. If we win our games in hand we’re only 5 points off the top and with 10 wins on the bounce who knows we could just knick it! We only need to have a bit of luck and cut out our silly mistakes.
