Disappointing result and performance from the 5s in a game which we really needed to win to keep our late season promotion charge going. Given the pleasure to grace the 1st team pitch, the team started the game solidly with Dodimead’s goal coming from a ridiculously cool finish after being put clean through after an aimless (or was it?) Robinson clearance. Dodimead was close to getting his second soon after in similar circumstances and was unlucky to shoot over the bar. As the half went on, we slowly began lose our composure, with every second/third pass seemingly going astray. While EBOGS were being restricted to long range shots, as long as the score line stayed at 1-0, there was a clear nervousness to our play.
The second half pretty much progressed along the same lines, with sloppy passing from the 5s and EBOGS slowly working their way into the game. Following another couple of good chances to put the game to bed, the inevitable happened with just ten minutes to go; EBOGS scoring with their only clear cut chance of the game. While the equaliser shocked us back into life, the only other chance we had was unluckily put wide by Burwell, with EBOGS defending strongly.
Just for future reference, in case anybody is in any doubt: we play amateur football in SAL Minor North Division 3 so nobody is expected to have a quiet alcohol-free Friday every week; however there’s a balance to be had and players turning up still half-drunk are letting the rest of team down. Moreover, eventually starting a proper warm-up just five minutes before the game is just plain stupid. Everybody should be turning up well in advance of the kick off and be volunteering to do some of the more mundane tasks such as putting up the goals/nets/corner flags – it can’t be the same people every week. I have absolutely no qualms about dropping people, no matter how good you think you are.
Anyway, it’s obviously not all negative news. Our disappointment and surprise at only drawing this game is indicative of how far the 5s have come this season. Following a shockingly bad start to now have been unbeaten in the league since October is a massive achievement, which the whole team should take credit for. Four games left, starting with close rivals Norseman this Saturday. Let’s try and end the season strongly and hope for a minor miracle elsewhere.
