And that pretty much tells the story of the first half – 3-0 down in 20 minutes and bitching and moaning at each other. Gaffer Morris dragged us into the changing room and tore strips from us. And rightly so.
In the 2nd half, we came out with renewed vigour and determination, and this culminating in Tom Spencer slaloming through the Salesian defence and finishing with aplomb. Our first goal of the season – at least one hoodoo broken! Buoyed on by this, we soon added another when Tom was felled desperately by a Salesian – this time Sam Morris stepped up to coolly slot the ball home – our first penalty scored this season in 4 attempts!
Soon after this the oppo had a player sent off for violent conduct on Simmo, and we smelled blood, but were almost too gung ho. With 10 mins to go, they sealed it when a deflected free kick gave Chris no chance. We kept fighting until the end however, and almost added another when Simmo headed narrowly over.
So we are still on 0 points, but a bit if fight that was previously lacking. We need to sort out our defending of set pieces, but most importantly we must believe that we can compete in this division. We are currently going out not believing we can do it – we can and we will – the biggest challenges are those that we impose upon ourselves – get over that hurdle and we will be fine.
However, my challenge to my team is to get a win on Saturday. Nothing less will do.
C Simpson, Nugent, Moruzzi, McLoughlin (Wootten), I Simpson, Wilkinson, Egan, Morris, Kenga (Mbelo), Amankwah, Spencer (Popoola).
