We are honoured to have distinguished cricket and football journalist-author Brian Scovell as our guest speaker this year.

Brian Scovell started his journalism career as a football reporter at the Isle of Wight Mercury in 1950 while still at school. Until going freelance in 2000 he worked for a variety of other newspapers including the Daily Sketch from 1960-71 and the Daily Mail from 1971-2000. He was made an Elected Life Member of the Football Writers Association (FWA) in 2001 after serving on FWA’s committe for 40 plus years and is also a Life Member and former committe member of the Cricket Writers’ Club (CWC). He is the only person to have been Chairman of both the FWA and the CWC.

During his career he has covered more than 350 Test matches in Test match playing countries and approximately the same number of international football matches including the 1966, 1982, 1986 and 1990 World Cups, visiting 92 countries in the process.

He is a qualified MCC and FA Coach having taken the course under Bobby Robson in 1969. He ran his own cricket club, The Woodpeckers, between 1966-2008 and is now Life President, Archivist and Fixture Secretary. He captained four matches for the CWC side against the ECB on the Nursery ground at Lord’s and now umpires.

He has written over 25 books on cricket and football selling over 250,000 copies. His books The England Managers; Jim Laker; and Bill Nicholson were all nominated (twice) for the British Sports Books Awards in 2007 and 2011.

Brian also succesfully campaigned the FA to erect a memorial bust for Walter Winterbottom, who he knwe personally, in St. George’s Park for his 100th Centenary in 2014. Most recently he campaigned for recognition for Lord Learie Constantine, an all time great West Indian cricketer and the UK’s first black peer, was realized with the bust of him unveiled, on May 1st, at the Palace of Westminster.
